Book Reviews

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American WestBury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown
My rating: ★★★★★

Forget the Hollywood westerns, the "cowboy and Indian" films... this book is an insight to the TRUE history of the American west. And it is one of broken treaties, murder, rape, humiliation and, in a word, genocide. The saddest thing is that the war against the indigenous Americans never ended... it continues today with the Dakota access pipeline and countless other violations of human rights. It's a great tragedy that the Europeans spread not only their 'civilizing' ways to the Original People of the Americas - but that the invaders learnt little of the environmental wisdom of the People they destroyed. ★★★★★

QueerQueer by William S. Burroughs
My rating: ★★★★☆

For many, this is their 'entry-point' into reading William Burroughs... and it is indeed a good place to start, or as good as Junkie at least. It prepares you for the strangeness, dark pathos and savageness of other Burroughs - offering a little dark humour and challenging you to (always) think for yourself!
If you get over the unique form/style - and in fact rather like it - then go for the Nova trilogy next! (aka the 'cut-up' trilogy) : The Soft Machine (1961, revised 1966 and 1968), The Ticket That Exploded (1962, revised 1967) and Nova Express (1964). That's some authentic Beat writing there - and you'll never look at literature in the same way again! ★★★★☆

Akira, Vol. 1Akira, Vol. 1 by Katsuhiro Otomo
My rating: ★★★★☆

Artists who pick up this book will enjoy it immensely - as will software games designers who create landscapes, flames, smoke, explosions, nighttime and speed! More critical readers would probably want for more text - - but don't pictures speak loader than words?
I Love it! An apocalyptic transhuman class emerge with unimaginable powers.. without a pacifying dose of *&^%$ they lose their heads and get all angry + defensive. Motorcycle gangs tear across New Tokyo cityscape anarchically exploiting the chaos of the near future. Much telekinetic violence to get your teeth into.. a joy! ★★★★☆
